Heritage Foundation brings social justice conference to UMobile

University of Mobile’s (UMobile) Center for Leadership and the Twelve23 Movement is sponsoring a two-night conference for UMobile students and members of the public called “Seek the Welfare of the City” and beyond Feb. 10–11 at 7 p.m. in Ram Hall on UMobile’s campus.

The conference, which will be presented by The Heritage Foundation, an independent educational institute in Washington, will focus on a conservative vision for social justice by highlighting compassionate solutions to poverty and suffering that serve to preserve human dignity and personal responsibility.

Jay Richards, senior fellow and research director at Discovery Institute and a visiting fellow at The Heritage Foundation, will be the keynote speaker for the event. He is the author of “Money, Greed, and God: Why Capitalism Is the Solution and Not the Problem” and has been a featured guest on “Fox & Friends.”

Topics to be discussed include subjects such as why good intentions aren’t good enough; what effective solutions look like; and the responsibility of family, church and business in overcoming social breakdown.

In addition to Richards, conference panelists will include: Randy Hicks of the Georgia Family Council; Craig Mitchell, assistant professor at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas; Mitch Temple, a marriage and family therapist; and Joe Savage, director of UMobile’s Center for Leadership.

“We are extremely excited that our students will be able to learn from some of the best conservative thinkers and practitioners in the world regarding issues related to poverty and the ever-growing needs of a community,” Savage said. “Our being selected by The Heritage Foundation to host this conference is an invaluable opportunity not only for the University of Mobile, but for all those who attend.”
