This summer, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Enterprise, in Coffee Baptist Association took advantage of LifeWay’s Game Day Central theme for Vacation Bible School (VBS) and offered the church’s first sports camp each day after VBS.
Although 1,105 people enrolled in VBS, Annette Whitton, director of children’s ministries, had no idea how many students would stay for the sports camp. Before the week ended, 400 first- through sixth-graders were taking softball, baseball, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer, dance, cheerleading and fashion classes.
“Our church is located in an area where kids around our church probably would not get to go to a camp,” Whitton said. “We wanted to be able to provide this for them. … I know it helped a lot of families. It wound up being a great week.”
She added that students around town are already talking about doing another sports camp next year at the church, which is led by Pastor Billy Joy.
“I’ve added three more classes — music, art and cooking,” Whitton said. “I hope more kids will stay next year.” (TAB)
