Hindu extremists vandalize church, beat pastor

JABALPUR, India — Hindu extremists vandalized an independent church in Gauri Nadi village, about seven miles from Jabalpur city in India’s north-central state of Madhya Pradesh on May 14. The attackers beat Dinanath Tiwari, 35, and roughed up Pastor Munnu Kujur, threatening to throw acid on the pastor’s face and bomb his church if he did not stop converting Hindus to Christianity.

Police arrested Kujur on charges of illegal conversion — which he denied — under the Madhya Pradesh Dharma Freedom of Religion Act. The pattern of extremists attacking a church and then lodging a complaint to get Christians arrested on charges of “illegal conversion” has become common, a local source said.
