KATMANDU, Nepal — A Hindu organization in Nepal announced plans Jan. 17 to launch a campaign to stop conversions by Christians. The coordinator of the Hindu Volunteers Organization accused Christians in Nepal of accelerating efforts to convert Hindus after the pope’s visit to India last year. He also blamed the government for not making any efforts to stop conversions. The organization is currently raising awareness against conversions in 150 Nepali schools located in remote areas. Earlier, the Nepalese Supreme Court issued a notice Jan. 5 to United Mission to Nepal (UMN) and the Adventist Development Relief Agency accusing the two organizations of engaging in religious preaching with a view of proselytizing. The tow organizations had not received the notice as of Feb. 4 and will respond to the Supreme Court once it is received. In 1951, UMN signed an agreement with the government not to proselytize or convert Hindus to Christianity through inducements.
