Hispanic Fellowship celebrates third anniversary

The Hispanic Baptist Fellowship of Alabama celebrated its third birthday Jan. 13 with birthday cake, fellowship and worship. About 75 people attended the celebration at Primera Iglesia Bautista Hispana de Enterprise, in Coffee Baptist Association, said Carlos Lemus, Hispanic missionary for Autauga and Chilton Baptist associations.

The celebration featured music presented by a group of Mayan Indians from Guatemala who now live in the state, as well as testimonies of the work in individual churches and a sermon from Lemus, who is also the fellowship’s president.

In the past, Hispanic pastors and workers were isolated, working in their own areas, Lemus said. But the creation of the fellowship, comprised of about 35 Hispanic Baptist churches and missions, has brought unity among the congregations. "We have a much better relationship among pastors," Lemus noted.

During its business session, members re-elected Lemus to serve a fourth year as president, and Omar Hernandez, director of Hispanic ministries for Montgomery Baptist Association, to serve a second term as secretary. They also elected a committee to research the possibility of hiring a treasurer in the future. The fellowship has several events planned for the upcoming months.
