The state’s Hispanic Baptist pastors had “a very good time of fellowship and encouragement” at their third annual pastors conference Nov. 12 at Camp Whispering Pines in Citronelle.
Held in conjunction with the state convention annual meeting, the conference drew 20 Hispanics — five pastors and their families — for a half-day of praise and worship, Bible study, sharing and fellowship.
“Our main purpose is to try to encourage each other through these kind of meetings,” said Carlos Lemus, Hispanic missionary to Autauga and Chilton Baptist associations and pastor of three Hispanic congregations. “We had a time of fellowship and testimonies; basically each pastor had the opportunity to tell what is happening in their own area.”
Those in attendance also heard a message from Jorge Morales, president of the Convention of Baptist Churches in Guatemala. This year’s state convention was Morales’ first in Alabama since the state began a partnership with Guatemalan Baptists in 2006.
“He brought a message of encouragement … and one minister decided to change some areas in his ministry because of it,” Lemus said.
Doug Beck, director of Mobile Baptist Association’s International Ministries Center, also visited the group to glean relationships and ideas that might help with a new Hispanic ministry cranking up in Mobile, Lemus said. “The (Hispanic) community here is growing, and we could help with that.” (TAB)
