The Alabama Baptist Historical Commission received the Davis C. Woolley Award from the Baptist History and Heritage Society (formerly the Southern Baptist Historical Society) for the most outstanding program in state Baptist history work.
Frances Hamilton, director of the commission, made the announcement during a report to the recent Alabama Baptist State Convention in Huntsville.
During her report, Hamilton also announced the commission has established an essay contest named for Hosea Holcombe, the first Alabama Baptist historian. She said awards will be giv4n to high school students in grades 10-12.
The first prize for the competition is $300, with $100 for second prize and two honorable mention awards of $50 each. The deadline for submissions is Sept., 2002.

Hamilton said the contest is part of ongoing efforts to excite young people about the history of Alabama Baptists. She said the commission previously provid3d a coloring book for children and now hopes to do something for other age groups.
“We want our young people to begin to experience the joy that there is in Alabama Baptist History,” she said. “We have a great history and heritage and I want us to be able to share that.”
