Have you ever noticed a business, restaurant or church only after needing its services, despite passing by it daily? This is called “location blindness”— when people tune out things they don’t think are relevant or needed. The more noise, the more blindness. And we live in that world today.
Let’s take a look at why this happens, especially for churches, and how you can overcome it.
1. Lack of Immediate Need
When people don’t need your ministry immediately, they filter it out. Churches, for example, often go unnoticed when people don’t feel an immediate felt spiritual need.
Solution: Try and stay relevant year-round
— Know what you should be known for in your community. Then host community events that keep your presence top of mind. Bonus if you associate it with your brand thread that defines your solution.
— Share social media content that speaks to felt needs, concerns, and goals to remind people of your value.
2. Blending in with other churches
If your church doesn’t stand out differently from others, people won’t notice you. They’ll just be aware of “all the churches” in your community. And often ignoring all of them.
Solution: Clarify your church brand
— Develop a unique brand thread that sets you apart. Especially for churches, this needs to be outside of a spiritual ministry, and instead, relevant to the community’s felt needs.
— Use consistent, unique, brand identity across signs, websites and social media to build recognition.
3. Lack of emotional connection
People remember brands that make them feel something. Without an emotional tie, your church is easily forgotten.
Solution: Share stories regularly
— Use testimonies of how your ministry has positively impacted lives. Videos are the easiest to control.
— Share these stories across your communication channels to build connections.
4. Information overload and noise
In a world full of distractions, your message can easily get lost in the noise. When overwhelmed, people may develop location blindness as they concentrate on things they know.
Solution: Simplify your message
— Keep your messaging clear and direct. Highlight the core thread you offer, not everything at once. Don’t be part of the problem. Eliminate noise in your church communication.
— Churches should focus on key messages like belonging, faith and hope, delivered simply and memorably in a unique and consistent way. This is the power of leaning into a thread.
