Huntsville highschooler wins national Bible Drill

Daniel Hopkins, a member of Whitesburg Baptist Church, Huntsville, in Madison Baptist Association, beat seven other high schoolers to win the National Youth Bible Drill & Speakers Tournament held June 8 at Trinity Baptist Church, Raleigh, N.C.

The Bible Drill is a yearly competition in which contestants compete to see who can find a specific biblical passage in the shortest time. Thirty-eight youth from more than 10 states competed in three divisions — the high school drill, the youth Bible Drill and the Speakers Tournament.

Last year’s event — held in Birmingham — was won by Hopkins’ sister, Michelle.

"It was great because my family all got to be there, including Michelle," Hopkins said.

He joked that he didn’t think he would win — both his dad and his sister thought another guy in the drill was faster than him, and he agreed.

"I was very surprised that I won," Hopkins said.

But Guy Morton, minister to children at Whitesburg Baptist, said he wasn’t surprised at all.

"It couldn’t happen to a nicer kid — he and his family are wonderful, God-fearing, Bible-believing people," Morton said. "He’s very committed to learning God’s Word, and I’m not surprised at all that he did so well."

Brett Frizzell, a member of Lighthouse Community Church, Harpersville, represented Alabama Baptists in the youth Bible Drill, and Jenna Tanner, a member of Shades Crest Baptist Church, Bluff Park, represented the state in the Speakers Tournament. (TAB)
