Bethany Baptist Church, Huntsville, celebrated its half-century mark Aug. 26 with a special worship service. According to Peggy Campbell, chairwoman for the anniversary event, many people assisted her with planning for the day’s festivities. At the beginning of the 10:30 a.m. service the Bethany Baptist choir sang “The Old Country Church.” Soloists Donna Wright and Sandy Thrower both sang special music, and Nina Williams and daughters Sarah, Jennie, and Rachel sang together as a quartet.
Monroe Baker, a charter church member of 1962, spoke about the early history of the Madison Baptist Association church to the 109 attendees, and former pastor James D. Johnson delivered the message. “Everyone really enjoyed [Johnson’s] message,” Bethany Baptist Pastor Dennis Cleveland noted.
Chairman of deacons George Williams assisted with the service’s presentations as narrator. Nancy Beasley, a representative of the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission, presented a plaque recognizing the church’s years of service. Charlie Howell, director of missions for Madison Association, closed with a prayer and blessing for the catered barbecue lunch that followed.
Cleveland said Bethany Baptist hopes to continue its ongoing ministry in the community and the members are excited about the possibilities in the future.
