I Played and I Won

I Played and I Won

Allan Worthington. Longwood, Fla.: Xulon Press, 2004. 288 pp. (Paperback).

Reading this interesting and inspiring book was a deeply moving experience for this reviewer. Alabamians will relate to this work because its author was born and grew up in the Birmingham area, where he was active in athletics at Phillips High School. He then attended the University of Alabama on a football scholarship and played baseball.

Readers will enjoy being reminded of Allan Worthington’s success as a pitcher with the New York (now San Francisco) Giants, Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins, as well as with a number of minor league teams. Worthington ended his career as head baseball coach at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va.

More importantly, Worthington became a Christian in 1958 and led a model Christian life since. This book would be an appropriate gift for people interested in sports.
