IBS distributes new NIV military Bibles

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.  — The International Bible Society (IBS) recently introduced several new Bibles designed especially for the military. IBS first provided Scriptures to American military troops during the War of 1812 and has provided Scriptures for the U.S. military and its allies in every major military conflict since, as well as during times of peace.

During the past two years, IBS has provided approximately 400,000 camouflage-cover Bibles to the military.

The new military editions, which were released July 1, include:

-An NIV Bible for the Army featuring a digitalized camouflage-pattern cover.

-A New International Version (NIV) Marine Corps Bible featuring  the service’s unique desert camouflage pattern, the “globe and anchor, rope  and chain” insignia, and the Marine Corps logo on the cover.

-A military camouflage-cover Bible, appropriate for all service branches,  with a “self-contained” worship service to help units without available chaplains to worship in small groups. The worship service materials include opening and closing prayers, hymns and suggested Scripture readings. Other “helps” include a mini concordance, an overview of the Bible, notes on how to study the Scriptures, a list of Web sites offering additional reference materials, and maps with overlays of ancient Mesopotamia and the modern-day Middle East.

IBS is also presently working with the Air Force and Navy to publish Bibles with their colors and logos. In addition, IBS customizes Bibles for specific military units.

Through its military chaplain outreach program, IBS sends Scriptures to military chaplains, with priority given to Reserve and National Guard units, who then distribute them to their service members.
