In Visible Fellowship: A Contemporary View of Bonhoeffer’s Classic Work Life Together

In Visible Fellowship: A Contemporary View of Bonhoeffer’s Classic Work Life Together

Jon Walker. Abilene, Texas: Leafwood Publishers, 2011. 174 pp. (Paperback).

Having been exposed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s life and ideas through frequent references by my pastor, I was eager to read and review this book. It seemed that a book by a contemporary writer from a cutting-edge church like Saddleback would be just the introduction to Bonhoeffer’s writing I needed.

It was.

“In Visible Fellowship” pulls the themes from Bonhoeffer’s book, “Life Together,” which is a treatise on life in the body of Christ. Each of the short chapters begins with a quote from Bonhoeffer and one from the Bible, launches into a structured interpretation of Bonhoeffer’s idea and ends with questions for thought or discussion.

Author Jon Walker’s work is instructive and almost certainly easier to understand than the original.

Walker has worked closely with Rick Warren and has served as editor-in-chief for Home Life magazine. He has written one other book presenting Bonhoeffer’s work from a contemporary perspective.
