A series of thunderstorms and torrential rainfall have resulted in severe flooding that has left scores dead and has caused widespread damage, mainly in southern Brazil.
The storms, which began in November and have continued into January, have claimed the lives of more than 140 people.
The latest flooding in January has displaced an estimated 60,000 people, adding to the almost 80,000 who were displaced in December.
“I am asking you to pray for south Brazil because since November it has rained almost every day and is consequently causing severe damage within the south,” Mayrinkellison Wanderley wrote to Baptist World Alliance (BWA). Wanderley is a staff member of the World Missions Board of the Brazilian Baptist Convention and a member of the BWA Emerging Leaders Network.
“This is one of the worst disasters in that region and many are separated from their homes and families,” Wanderley said.
Water levels have risen as high as 30 feet, and water-soaked soil has caused landslides.
Areas of the country affected include Santa Catarina, a southern state, and the central state of Minas Gerais.
“Please join us in prayer for south Brazil and those affected by these devastating rains,” Wanderley said. (BWA)
