NEW YORK — Paul G. Irwin has been appointed as the president of the American Bible Society (ABS) after serving as the interim head of the Bible mission organization for nearly a year.

Irwin, an ordained United Methodist minister who has taught at the Boston University School of Theology, was affirmed to continue as president after a yearlong search, the New York-based society announced May 18. The organization, founded in 1816, is preparing to mark its bicentennial in 2016.
