George Huddleston Jackson of Vestavia Hills died March 19 at age 84. A retired Baptist minister, Jackson was a former associate editor of The Alabama Baptist newspaper.
He was a graduate of Howard College (now Samford University) and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. Birmingham Baptist Bible College awarded him a doctor of divinity degree.
He served the staff of churches across Alabama, including Wylam Baptist Church; First Baptist Church, Jasper; First Baptist Church, Gadsden; First Baptist Church, Birmingham; First Baptist Church, Russellville; Clayton Street Baptist Church (now Heritage), Montgomery; and First Baptist Church, Hoover, where he was for the last 15 years. He also served as senior pastor of Tobinsport and Orleans Baptist churches in Indiana while he was in seminary. He served as interim pastor of 39 churches throughout his years in the ministry.
Jackson was the director of Samford’s Howard Extension Division when he retired after 25 years service at Samford.
Jackson also served on many local committees and boards including the Alabama Baptist Executive Board, Alabama Baptist Scholarship Board, Baptist Home for Senior Citizens (Cook Springs), Alabama Baptist Benefit Society, secretary and treasurer of Alabama Citizens Action Program (ALCAP), secretary of the Alabama Baptist Pastors Conference, moderator of the Franklin Baptist Association, teacher in the Howard College Extension Division and Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jane; two daughters; three granddaughters; on great-grandson and two sisters.
