A Way to See in the Dark
Centricity Music

Jason Gray’s first Centricity release, “A Way to See in the Dark,” is a simple, sparsely-arranged collection of mostly acoustic songs. Gray’s baritone voice is a strong instrument, the perfect compliment to the uncluttered arrangements. The album has an open and honest feel, perhaps a result of Gray’s openness in sharing his own weaknesses. A chronic stutterer, Gray bares it all when chatting with his audience between songs. As Gray says, “When I’m willing to work out of my weakness, there are more chances for God to show up and for the unexpected to happen. My strengths — which are really quite modest — are limited to me but with my weaknesses, the possibilities are boundless.”

The album’s first released single, “Remind Me Who I Am,” is one of the best songs on the record, reminding us that God seeks us out as His beloved despite our feelings of failure and rejection. “No Thief Like Fear” highlights Gray’s light rock sensibilities, sounding very much like a well-done eighties rock anthem. “Good to Be Alive” is another standout, a feel-good, lighthearted call to living life to its fullest.

This record is full of honest, simple, good music. Recommended. (Sharp)
