Jennifer Knapp continues to evolve on her latest release, “The Way I Am.” It is quite evident in the songs Knapp wrote for this album that she has wrestled with her own sinfulness in light of God’s love and forgiveness. The result is a collection of songs that cry out to God in need of His grace.

It’s difficult to choose one song on this album that stands above the rest. From beginning to end, Knapp gives everything she has to maintain the focus and intensity of each song. Whether it’s in the rock-infused songs such as “By and By” and “Charity,” the light jazz sonority of “Around Me” or the stirring ballad “In Two (The Lament),” Knapp conveys a deep sense of conviction regarding her need for God’s love.

Though Knapp displays a wide variety of musical prowess, this project continues in the same musical vein as her previous albums. She continues to pour her heart and soul into her soulful vocals and her guitar-driven blend of folk and rock. What separates this work from the others is the candid reflections of the artist captured within the lyrics of each song. “The Way I Am” is perhaps Knapp’s most insightful and contemplative work to date.
