From the label that brought us Superchic[k] comes Jimmy Needham, who is majoring in philosophy and history at Texas A&M University but seems bound and determined for a different career. His grades in his classes? Who knows but his debut record gets an A-plus.
His influences are obvious but his music is still a unique and interesting blend of these modern sounds made popular by their spin on classic styles.
In “Speak,” you hear strains of Gavin DeGraw and Jack Johnson and even Maroon 5 and the Counting Crows.
But you also hear the Bible — in fact, Needham’s are some of the cleverest gospel-centric lyrics in Christian contemporary music today.
That fact added to his slam poetry on the last track indicates Needham as one Aggie with his pickin’ finger pressed firmly on the pulse of his generation.
