Clear the Stage
Inpop Records
Jimmy Needham has released his fifth record (his fourth studio effort for Inpop records), “Clear the Stage.” Produced by Ed Cash, with most songs written or co-written by Needham, this CD takes a different path than his prior releases. There’s not a single theme work. Rather, the common thread is “how all of the facets of my personal life keep leading me to an expanding view of Christ,” Needham explains.
The title cut, “Clear the Stage,” written by Ross King while Needham was still in high school, is a simple ballad with powerful lyrics. Upon hearing it for the first time Needham said: “It shipwrecked me.” With Needham’s emotional delivery, that will likely be your first thought as well.
The record’s lead single started life as Needham’s prayer, born of his feelings of inadequacy as he began this project. “If I Ever Needed Grace” is a vulnerable, personal look into Needham’s life and struggles. This song singlehandedly sets the tone for this very personal and honest record and is easily the best song on the CD.
Perhaps the most personal song on the album is “The Only One,” a brutally honest inward look with the ultimate realization that God is the only true satisfaction in his life.
Needham’s fans have come to expect honesty in his music, and they certainly won’t be disappointed with his latest effort.
