The Hymns Sessions (Vol. 1)
Independent digital-only release

This record started life as a thank-you gift to Needham’s fans who, via the kickstart method of fundraising, financed Needham’s last project “Clear the Stage.” Needham’s first indie release since his 2005 debut “For Freedom,” “The Hymns Sessions” has taken on a life of its own, thanks to Needham’s quirky voice, excellent performance and production values, and some amazing performances by guest artists.

You’ve maybe already heard, so let’s just get it out before we go any further. “How Great Thou Art,” featuring Christian rapper Trip Lee IS as amazing as you’ve heard. Needham’s delicate voice, juxtaposed with Lee’s rap, and wrapped in a moving arrangement is perhaps the record’s best, although every time I say that, I keep thinking of all the other excellent music on the record. Guest artist Kevin Jones’ vocals, framed by simple acoustic guitar on “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” comes to mind.

There’s something here for everybody: grinding B3 organ, clean blues guitar riffs, smoky jazz, delicate acoustic fingerstyle guitar, danceable percussion and on it goes. Yes this is a record of hymns like you’ve never heard.

You’ll have to get this album digitally. It’s available from places like iTunes, Amazon and Needham’s own website. But get it you should.
