John W. Stamps, who served for more than 50 years in ministry, died Aug. 31. He was 79.
Stamps graduated from Fayette High School then served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He graduated from Ouachita Valley Vo-Tech College in 1960. He earned his bachelor’s degree, master of ministry degree and doctorate of theology from International Bible Institute and Seminary.
Stamps served as pastor, interim pastor half-time pastor or bivocational pastor of 21 churches in Alabama including Philadelphia Baptist Church, Bankston; Mulberry Springs Baptist Church, Sulligent; Barnesville Baptist Church, Hamilton; New Hope Baptist Church, Berry; Oak Ridge Baptist Church, Kennedy; Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, Fayette; Spring Hill Baptist Church, Fayette; Union Chapel Baptist Church, Guin; Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Millport; Mount Hebron Baptist Church, Northport; Hopewell Baptist Church, Bankston; and Fern Springs Baptist Church, Eldridge. He was the first person to be licensed and ordained by Grace Baptist Church, Fayette, and later served as the church’s interim pastor. He also served a church in Florida.
He served as moderator and director of evangelism for Sipsey Baptist Association and as moderator for Lamar Baptist Association.
Stamps was serving as part-time pastor of two unaffiliated churches at the time of his death.
Stamps was preceded in death by his wife, Avis; one son and one grandson. He is survived by two children, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
