I’m involved in most everything but brotherhood,” Jean Johnston joked about her involvement at Brent Baptist Church. “Ms. Jean” is known at Brent Baptist not only as the wife of the late former Pastor Robert H. Johnston but also for the contributions she still makes to the church. On Sunday mornings, she can be found teaching Sunday School or singing in the choir. On Wednesday evenings, she teaches a children’s missions class. During the week, she leads a Woman’s Missionary Union group and folds bulletins for the Sunday service. She also visits the sick.
Q: How did you come to know the Lord?
A: At a very young age — my parents were Christians; I lived in a Christian home. My pastor believed it was very important to teach us at a young age, so I heard about Christ starting when I was young. I was 12 when He became my personal Savior.
Q: How have you been involved in church?
A: Right now, I teach adult women’s classes. For about 10 years, I’ve been working in the nursery at night so the young married couples can go to classes. I have worked in Vacation Bible School all throughout my life. My husband and I ministered together as a team.
Q: What do you get from those ministries?
A: It is my life. I cannot imagine my life without being related to the church experience. It’s my joy and my peace being involved in the work Jesus has us to do.
Q: What difference has being a Christian made in your life?
A: A total difference. I have always known what it looks like to see Jesus in other people’s lives, but to have Him in my own has been the difference in life or death. It’s been a wonderful life.
