Jones, Norma

Jones, Norma

Norma Jones is someone you should know because she recently retired from 40 years of service as a minister of music at Coosada Baptist Church.

Q: What led you to serve as minister of music?

A: This all happened at age 15. My sisters and I were singing in a trio at Coosada. Our church choir director left and they asked me to take the job. I said that I would do whatever I can and I will fill in until they find someone else, and I’ve been there ever since. It was a wonderful opportunity that the Lord provided for me. I didn’t set out to be a minister of music, but this is obviously where the Lord wanted me to be.

Q: What did this position demand?

A: I led the church choir. As my ministry grew, I directed adult choir, children’s choir and youth choir on and off through the years. I led handbell choir and a ladies ensemble in the last six years.

Q: What did you get from being in this position at Coosada?

A: The blessings are just immeasurable. The joy of being able to express my love for the Lord through music has enriched my life beyond words. I couldn’t have asked for a better place to serve. That tie to the church has been my stability.
Q: How do other family members support you in your position?
A: Even before I got my driver’s license when Gene and I were dating, he would drive me around in his daddy’s station wagon to pick up the children in the children’s choir. They all have been very supportive of my ministry. They sing in the choir and have all been very close. We have four generations going to the church.

Q: How do you see yourself involved in this in the future?

A: I am there. I’m still singing in ensembles and doing the hand bells. I’m there to fill in and do whatever I can.
