Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup

The stylized photo on the cover of Josh Wilson’s “Trying to Fit the Ocean in a Cup” seems an homage to the cover art of ’80s teen novels, which seems appropriate after listening to the bubbly mmm-bop therein.
Wilson is the very Jason Mraz-ish talent behind the hit “3 Minute Song,” a jangly, lighthearted ode to contemporary Christian music’s eternal dilemma: trying to fit the ocean of God into the cup of a pop song. But there are mature moments aplenty, particularly the desperately seeking “Something’s Got to Change,” “Oak Avenue” and “Beautiful Like This.” Bringing to mind the sounds of Gavin DeGraw and John Mayer, Wilson’s debut gets better by the song.
