Judson College alumna Jane Vicroy Scott of the New York University (NYU) School of Medicine delivered the address at the 162nd commencement ceremony of her alma mater, Alabama’s only women’s college.
As director of the office of industrial liaison at NYU, Scott is responsible for examining the research at the university and the school of medicine, seeking inventions or discoveries potentially useful in other areas. She manages patent protection and negotiates with companies to develop products for the public. At Judson’s commencement ceremony, Scott received the honorary doctorate of humane letters for excellence in the advancement of science and commitment to the well-being of human life.
Commencement ceremonies on June 24 honored graduates from 33 Alabama cities, six states and two overseas countries. President David E. Potts presented awards including the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award to a student and non-student.
Ashley Elizabeth Dyess (4.0 average) of Sylacauga received the student award, and the non-student award went to Joseph William Mathews of Birmingham. This award recognizes altruistic spirit and service to humanity.
Judson’s Winifred Cobbs, who teaches English and modern languages, received the Lula and Alton Holley award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching. The recipient of the Holley award is determined by a vote of the graduating class.
Vanessa Selby Dolberry, cum laude graduate from Scottsboro, received the Bible award in recognition of Christian leadership. The J.C. Faulkner award recognizing academic achievement, sportsmanship and support of Judson College was presented to Cynthia Miller Fair of Scottsboro.
Summa cum laude graduates Caroline Salone Bailey of Homewood, Ashley Elizabeth Dyess of Sylacauga and Stephanie Lynn Highsmith from Lawley (now of Australia) were recognized for highest academic averages.
Rick Lance, executive director-treasurer of State Board of Missions, Judson Chancellor N.H. McCrummen and President Potts conferred upon James E. (Buddy) Gray, Jr., the honorary doctorate of divinity for his devotion to spreading the gospel and service to God. Gray, pastor of Hunter Street Church, Hoover, is president of the Alabama Baptist State Convention.
