Judson hosts more than 500 at Crosspoint sports camps

More than 500 fourth- through eighth-graders from five states converged at Judson College in Marion this summer for two five-day sessions of Crosspoint sports camps sponsored by LifeWay Christian Resources.

Judson is one of more than 10 campuses and retreat centers across the nation providing space for the camps — one of two in Alabama — but it has the distinction of being the longest-running, having sponsored camps for 11 years.

“We enjoy coming to Judson,” said Brad Barnett, Judson’s Crosspoint director. “The compact campus works well for us. We were on another campus earlier with seven dorms, and it sometimes took 15 minutes to go from building to building.

“We like having our campers closer together so we don’t waste time and so we can find a camper quickly if there’s an emergency.”

At Crosspoint, campers choose from 11 different sports and select two for concentration. Instructors give elementary instruction for beginners and more advanced instruction for those with some skills.

And just because someone has played baseball or soccer or some other sport doesn’t mean he or she gravitates to that track — campers are encouraged to try something new, Barnett said.

He also explained that Crosspoint integrates the gospel with athletic instruction.

“There is a daily Bible study of approximately 60 minutes led by staffers,” Barnett said. “And the nightly worship is ‘kid-friendly.’ It features contemporary and upbeat music and a message by the camp pastor on their level. We don’t use ‘churchy’ words that kids might not understand but try to speak the message of Christ in their language.”

Judson Facilities Director Ricky Clements said the college continues to be a popular camp location.

“We’ve begun already coordinating the dates and schedule for next year,” he said. “A lot of Alabama churches come here year after year. They know us best and enjoy coming back. We see great advantage for the college since we have students who first came to Judson as Crosspoint campers.”

Clements noted that another plus for the Judson camps is the availability of the Marion Military Institute (MMI) campus a few blocks away. He explained the Judson campers use a number of facilities at MMI, including the gym, baseball field and track.

Barnett said a dozen boys and girls became Christians in the two weeks and a number of others made recommitments of their faith. “This is what it’s all about,” he said.
