ABUJA, Nigeria — The Kaduna state government in northern Nigeria ordered the displacement of a Christian community in Gonin-Gora village following claims that Christians were responsible for the death of a prominent Muslim legislator during May religious conflicts between Muslims and Christians.
A number of Muslims were killed in the predominately Christian Gonin-Gora village, including prominent Muslim political leader Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi, a member of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives. His death reportedly led the Muslim-dominated state government to propose displacing the Christian community and building a police and military outpost to provide a safe road for Muslims traveling to Nigeria’s capital city of Abuja.
State Commissioner for Information Alhaji Rabiu Bako, a Muslim, said the government had earmarked Gonin-Gora, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway, for the construction of industries, police barracks and federal and state housing.
