As Bill King looks toward his retirement at the end of the year, he says it’s less like retiring and more like “retreading.”
As a boy, he raised and sold worms, and he’s been busy ever since. He doesn’t expect that to change, even as he steps back from his role as director of missions for Tuskegee Lee Baptist Association, where he’s served since 2007.
“It has been my joy and privilege to serve each of those churches and one great association,” King said of the more than 40 churches that comprise Tuskegee Lee.
He first answered the call to ministry as a senior in high school. During his junior year at Samford University, he began serving as pastor of Half Acre Baptist Church in Linden.
‘Retreading’ not retiring
“Except for a brief period after I moved to New Orleans to attend the seminary there, I served as a pastor for the next 31 years,” King said. That included churches in Butler, Fort Payne and Rainbow City, as well as Georgia and Mississippi.
As King prepares to “retread,” he said he plans to continue writing for newspapers and Mature Living magazine and maybe “even crank out another book or two.” He also noted that his humorous alter ego — Brother Billy Bob Bohannon — is not retiring and will still be available for appearances.
King also will be available to serve as an interim pastor or pulpit supply or provide music for churches.
