John Nelson Kuykendall, a pastor of Alabama Baptist churches for nearly 50 years, died Nov. 22. He was 70.
A native of Dutton, Kuykendall earned a bachelor of arts in history from Samford University in Birmingham and master of divinity and doctor of ministry from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky.
His first pastorate was at age 17 at Happy Home Baptist Church, Henagar, in Sand Mountain Baptist Association.
He also served as pastor of seven others churches in north Alabama and Kentucky, retiring in 2002 from Golden Springs Baptist Church, Anniston, in Calhoun Baptist Association after serving there for 20 years.
Kuykendall was involved in many Baptist leadership roles including moderator for Calhoun Association, member of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions and trustee for the University of Mobile.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Sue Camp Kuykendall, of 51 years; two daughters; one son; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. (TAB)
