The newly renovated J.L. Bedsole Library at the University of Mobile features approximately 1,300 Christian books donated by Lifeway Christian Resources, expanding students’ access to resources that support their studies and spiritual growth.
The library’s central bookcases have been named the Rick Lance Christian Studies Collection in honor of Lance, outgoing executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the library Oct. 22.

“I am deeply honored and extremely grateful for the privilege to have my name associated with the Christian Studies Collection of the J.L. Bedsole Library,” Lance said. “The University of Mobile strives for excellence in Christian Higher Education. That passion is epitomized in their efforts to help students to develop a Biblical worldview in life preparing them to serve Christ through their vocations.”
UM President Charles Smith shared during the ceremony, “We decided we wanted to honor the life and bear the name of a man who has championed the University of Mobile not only as a pastor, but also during his 28-year tenure as executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, Dr. Rick Lance.”
For students, the renovated library provides updated spaces and resources to support their academic journeys.

“I have truly enjoyed experiencing the newly renovated [library],” said Kinsey Otzenberger, a current student. “We are blessed to have a space that has been thoughtfully designed with students in mind by providing new classrooms and study areas. The updated design creates an environment that gives students the resources and space we need to pursue academic success.”
UM officials said they are grateful for the families, churches and ministry partners who helped make this renewed space possible.
