Lara Landon released her sophomore record “Overcome” on May 1. If you like angst-driven piano and strings-based pop, maybe you’ll like this record. I don’t.

Landon, a California native and Belmont University graduate, enjoyed modest success with her debut project, “Beloved,” produced by Michael Omartian, with songwriting by the likes of Jason Ingram and Mitch Dane. Her well received radio single “Closer” came from that effort. “Overcome” is co-produced by Ingram and Landon and again includes help from Mitch Dane, but this record lacks the feeling or conviction of anything from her debut release.

Perhaps her next record, assuming there is one, will build on the strength of her first release. Landon has a strong and beautiful voice, and I look forward to another good project from her in the future.
