Personal spiritual growth for Alabama Baptist church leaders resulting in a deeper relationship with the Lord — that’s the goal of the upcoming conference Connect With God: A Time of Personal Renewal.
“Because of the busyness of life as leaders, we must pull apart from the daily routine in order to hear from God,” said Teman Knight, director of the leadership and church health office of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM). “This was part of Jesus’ regular routine. If Jesus spent 40 days in prayer before beginning His ministry, we should be able to give four hours for our ministries.”
The conference will be held as identical events, 10 a.m.–2:30 p.m., on two days and in two locations: Jan. 30 at the Baptist Building in Montgomery and Feb. 1 at Lakeside Baptist Church, Birmingham.
‘Heart’ of effectiveness
Along with gaining practical tips about how to lead a spiritual retreat in a church setting, participants will also experience a minispiritual retreat during the conference.
Conference leader Gregory Frizzell, prayer and spiritual awakening specialist for the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, said, “Connecting with God is at the heart of what makes Christian leaders effective.” The conference is the first of several events to be sponsored by the SBOM as part of the 2008–2009 Alabama Baptist State Convention emphasis, LEADERconnect, headed by Dale Huff, director of the SBOM’s LeaderCare and church administration office.
“Southern Baptists are historically very active in evangelism and missions, not being as active in focusing on personal spiritual growth,” he said. “A person’s spiritual health and holiness greatly affects their usefulness in being evangelistic and missional.”
