C.S. Lewis biographer and Birmingham native Alan Jacobs received the 2006 John Pollock Award for Christian Biography Oct. 10 at Samford University in Birmingham. The award, presented annually by Samford’s Beeson Divinity School, recognized Jacobs’ book, “The Narnian: The Life and Imagination of C.S. Lewis,” as the most distinguished Christian biography of the past year. Jacobs, a former member of 85th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, is professor of English at Wheaton College in Illinois.
A graduate of the University of Alabama, Jacobs holds a doctorate from the University of Virginia. He is also the author of six other books, one of which is set for release soon.
Roger Willmore, pastor of Deerfoot Baptist Church, Trussville, said he was amazed to hear Jacobs’ testimony of becoming a Christian at 85th Street Baptist, which merged with Mount Olive Baptist Church to form Deerfoot Baptist in 1994.
“I told a number of people in my church who are from 85th Street that Alan is a person who indicates the significance of their ministry. In a way, they can claim some credit for the impact he is having,” Willmore said, noting that Jacobs’ parents still attend Deerfoot Baptist. “He’s someone who came along in his childhood there and now has a significant place in Christian ministry.”
