Kim Lewis is the full-time minister to children and preschoolers at Elkdale Baptist Church, Selma. She has served in this position for six years and has been involved with children’s ministry for 21 years.
Q: How did you come to know the Lord?
A: My dad was in the military; we had just moved back to Selma. I was in the sixth grade. A lady in the church had been talking about [the gospel with me]. … One Sunday [at church], I was sitting beside my grandmother. … My heart was beating out of my chest. I remember going down (the aisle). It was just a sweet time.
Q: What are some other ministries you have been involved in?
A: Children’s missions — Mission Friends, GAs (Girls in Action) and RAs (Royal Ambassadors). Every year, I’m the VBS (Vacation Bible School) director and have been involved on the state team. [I’ve also been] associational VBS director for a couple years.
Q: How has your family supported you?
A: My children have been very helpful at times when I’ve had a project to do. They’ve spent a lot of time up at the church helping me. My husband [has been] understanding of my time at the church.
Q: What does the ministry demand?
A: The ministry has taught me a lot about “dying to self.” Being in the ministry has taught me to take the focus off myself and that there’s a much bigger picture.
Q: What difference has Jesus Christ made in your life?
A: It changes everything about a person’s life. It changes their perspective on things. You look at a sunset differently. … You look at the stars differently. [It’s] cool to me to realize that He becomes the “Who,” the “What,” the “Why” and the “How” we do things.
