Limestone Association marks 90th anniversary

Limestone Baptist Association celebrated its 90th anniversary in May during its Woman’s Missionary Union (WMU) annual meeting at Southside Baptist Church, Athens. During the program, Director of Missions Robert Fullerton highlighted past and present work in the association, which initially was part of Madison Baptist Association and now serves 38 churches and 17,643 members. Other presentations were made by the moderator and leaders of Baptist Men, disaster relief, WMU, student ministries, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School (VBS), music and Baptist Campus Ministries.

"It was excellent," Fullerton said. "I think those who attended came away with a better knowledge of associational work in general and, more importantly, of our particular work in Limestone County (and) how we are involved in North American and international missions."

In North America, the association works with Green Mountain Baptist Association in Vermont planting churches and Central New York Baptist Association doing VBS, construction work and door-to-door evangelism. Limestone Association also recently formed a partnership with Baptists in Michigan to respond to their needs. In the future, Fullerton hopes to expand the association’s ministry in Limestone County.

"If we are going to reach new people, we have to be aware of where our county is building up in population," he said. "We have a lot of different cultures here, and we have to be open to international-type ministries here. I have in mind at least two places where it appears we ought to think about planting a church in our county."
