Edited by Ruth Alice-Von Bismarck and Ulrich Kabitz. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1995. 378 pp. (Hardback).
Subtitled “The Correspondence Between Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Maria Von Wedemeyer, 1943–45,” this challenging and moving work reminds readers of the terrible activity of demonic forces, as well as genuine Christian commitment. As knowledgeable Christians are aware, Bonhoeffer was a German pastor who was imprisoned by the Nazi regime during World War II because of his resistance to their efforts. Eventually in 1945, he was put to death at age 39.
Moving, indeed, are the words of these two who were devoted to Christ and each other, regardless of their circumstances. Called “a deeply moving love story in a deadly time” by Jurgen Moltmann, this book shows courage personified and reveals hopes, dreams, worries and fears as readers witness a timeless love story. If this contribution does nothing else, then it highlights that the people of God need to show courage as the need arises.
