Brenda Lovelady Spahn, who founded The Lovelady Center in Birmingham 20 years ago, died Dec. 18. She was 75.
Over the past 20 years, more than 19,600 women have come through The Lovelady Center, a women’s shelter that helps women find rehabilitation and healing after leaving prison or if they simply need help getting life restarted. Spahn, known widely as “Miss Brenda,” started the program in her home with seven former inmates, and the work has now grown to include a shelter and two thrift stores.
In 2021, Spahn handed leadership of the center to her daughter, Melinda MeGehee.
