Lutheran Church in Norway loses 15,000 members

OSLO, Norway — More than 15,000 members left the Lutheran Church in Norway in mid-August after the Church created an online portal allowing people to verify their membership status, including signing up and dropping membership.

Lutheran Church officials attributed the exodus of members to those who had already decided to leave the Church long ago, according to The Christian Post. Church attendance in Norway has been on the decline for 10 years, falling by almost 1 million during that time. The Church currently has 3.8 million members.

Church council leader Kristin Gunleiksrud Raaum said of the loss of members, “We will continue to have a broad and open national church. But no one should be a member of a religious community against their will, and therefore I am glad that this self-solution is in place.” (TAB)
