Marion, Lucius Brainard Jr.

Former Judson College trustee Lucius Brainard Marion Jr. died Jan. 3 in Clarksdale, Miss. He was 86.

A native of Clinton, S. C., Marion was pastor of First Baptist Church, Tuscaloosa, 1951-1961 and served as a trustee of Judson College in Marion during that time.

Marion received his undergraduate degree from Furman University, Greenville, S.C., and his bachelor of divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.

Besides Alabama, he served churches in South Carolina and Indiana before moving to Clarksdale in 1961 where he became pastor of Clarksdale Baptist Church.

During his 20-year tenure, he founded the Clarksdale Baptist School in 1964 and served as head-master until his retirement in 1986. After his 1981 retirement from Clarksdale Baptist, the church named his pastor emeritus.

Ordained in 1937, Marion served in several denominational capacities during his ministry, including vice president of the Brotherhood Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention; trustee of Furman University and Clarke College, Newton, Miss., as well as Judson College; president of the Mississippi chapter of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and faculty member at the Gulf Shores Baptist Assembly.

In 1997, the Lions Club International Foundation named Marion a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest form of recognition it confers, for his “dedication to making the world a better place through humanitarian service.” (TAB)
