Marler receives Samford’s George Macon Award

Penny Long Marler has taught in Samford University’s religion department since 1993 and was recently awarded the George Macon Memorial Award from the Birmingham university for outstanding performance as a teacher and counselor.

Samford Provost Brad Creed presented the award during the 2013 spring semester opening convocation Jan. 29 held in Wright Center.

Creed noted Marler’s nationally known research on church attendance that has influenced both the sociological understanding of religion and policymaking in religious denominations.

Marler’s strong mentoring relationships are a hallmark of her work, Creed said.

Marler holds a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University, master’s and doctorate degrees from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky., and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky.
