Martin, Harold Eugene

Harold Eugene Martin, a retired newspaper executive and former Alabama Baptist, died July 4. He was 83.
Martin won the Pulitzer Prize for special reporting in 1970 while he was editor and publisher of the Montgomery Advertiser and Alabama Journal. He reported in a yearlong series of articles about the drug experimentation happening in the state prison system. His stories changed Alabama prisons.

Martin, who left Alabama in 1980 to become president of Jefferson-Pilot Publications, had also served as assistant general manager of The Birmingham News prior to his work in Montgomery.

An active Baptist while in Alabama, Martin served on the board of directors for The Alabama Baptist newspaper 1964–1973. He also served on the board of directors of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association for 20 years.
He retired in Texas in 1985. He is survived by his wife, Jean. (TAB)
