It’s time to saturate the state and nation with the good news of Jesus Christ, said Rick Lance, executive director of the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, during his report to convention messengers Nov. 17.
“The gospel of Jesus Christ needs to be spread” and God’s Plan for Sharing (GPS) is Alabama Baptists’ new strategy to do that,” he explained.
In Acts 8:26–40, Philip is a first-century example of GPS, Lance said, noting Philip was not a Baptist minister. He was a layperson and when an angel of the Lord said go, he went. And one person he witnessed to — the Ethiopian eunuch — would later lead the Samaritans.
“What Philip simply did was take where the man was in understanding God’s Word and he preached to him Jesus,” Lance said. “GPS is exactly that. It is focused on Jesus.”
Noting the 2 million to 2.5 million Alabamians who don’t claim Jesus as Savior, Lance said, “There are many still seeking Jesus Christ, and they live right here in Alabama.”
And more people are needed to share, he said, noting there is only One who can do the saving. “We are the messengers carrying the message,” Lance said.
“The one true and living One is the only One who can do the saving.
“This one Jesus can change your life and save your soul. If we believe that, GPS will come natural for us.
“Your State Board of Missions and state convention and family of churches we make up as the state convention, we’re all about preaching Jesus Christ,” Lance said. “If other people might turn … to Jesus like Philip of old, may we be GPS driven.” (TAB)
