Although it may be known as an “old country church” in its community, Maytown Baptist Church may surprise many with its use of modern technology.
The Bessemer Baptist Association church celebrated its 100th anniversary Aug. 14 with a standing room-only sanctuary and two full overflow rooms with the service streaming over Skype (a software application that allows users to make voice and video calls over the Internet).
A combined choir, including the church’s Joyful Singers (senior adult choir), led worship with hymns like “Shoutin’ Time in Heaven.” Gov. Robert Bentley shared a message on godly leadership in the coming years, drawing from 1 Chronicles 16:8.
Minister of Music and Education Lee Majors said it was an “uplifting service.”
Alabama Baptist Historical Commission representative Bill Mathews presented Maytown Baptist with a certificate, and the church presented attendees with printed pictures of the first pastor, M.T. Huey.
The 50-year members were honored as well as the descendants of the first members and of Huey.
Pastor John Killian’s challenge to “the old country church” for the next 100 years? “Remain faithful as in the past.”
