NAYPYIDAW, Myanmar — Myanmar’s military attacked an historic Christian village, killing a 7 year old and two adults and destroying almost a third of the structures.
On Nov. 23, hundreds of members of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar’s military) attacked Mon Hla village in the Sagaing Region by land and air, reported the relief group Barnabas Fund. Killed were the child, a woman and a man.
Soldiers set fires that consumed more than 200 of the village’s 700 structures. A church and Christian school were among the buildings destroyed.
The people living in Mon Hla are descendants of Christians who settled in that area four and five centuries ago.
The Tatmadaw has launched assaults against another historic Christian village — Chaung Yoe. The most recent attack was in May 2022 and destroyed the majority of the homes. The village of Chan Thar experienced a similar attack in June 2021, stated Barnabas Fund.
Myanmar is predominately Buddhist. The Tatmadaw came to power in February 2021. Even before then, the Tatmadaw persecuted Christians, who constitute about 6.2% of the population.
Myanmar (also called Burma) is No. 12 on Open Doors’ 2022 World Watch List of places most difficult to be a Christian.
