W. Landon Miller, former pastor of Ruhama Baptist Church, Birmingham, in Birmingham Baptist Association, died Feb. 5. He was 88.
During his 1957–1965 pastorate at the former Ruhama Baptist, the oldest church in Birmingham and second oldest in the state, Miller also served as president of the General Ministers Association of Greater Birmingham. In this capacity, after four girls died in the bombing of Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, he joined several civic leaders to report on the situation to President John F. Kennedy.
Miller was accepted to Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., but was unable to attend because of the Depression. He was first in his class at Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. Miller received his doctorate from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas.
He and his wife, Katherine Rankin Miller, had retired to Hollywood, Fla. — where he passed away — from the pastorate of Northminster Baptist Church, Richmond, Va.
Miller served as pastor of churches in Sherman, Texas, and Brookhaven, Miss., before his tenure at Ruhama. He is survived by his wife and son Marshall. (TAB)
