A Pentecostal minister’s strict marriage contract with his wife has been thrown out by an appeals court judge. Myles Spires Jr. attempted to have the contract upheld as part of his divorce hearing, but Judge Frank Schwelb dismissed the contract as slavery.
The agreement required Spires’ wife to carry out his requests precisely. She could not disagree with him in public or have money without his permission.
Spires, former pastor of Abundant Life Apostolic Church, Washington, said the contract was “very extreme” but said it was a Bible-based effort to resolve marriage problems. The appeals judge upheld that the contract was unenforceable and gave custody of the children to the wife. (EP)
