Ministry Tips — Are They Ready?

Minister of children, Hunter Street Baptist Church, Hoover

There is an eternal difference between knowing about Christ and knowing Christ.

In our children’s ministry, one of the most important topics revolves around salvation and baptism. How do we know when children are ready? When should they be baptized? How do we help parents walk their children through these all-important events?

Here are a few questions to ask related to salvation:

Can the child articulate the gospel and explain how a person is saved?

Is it personal? Does the child know what sin is and understand that they have sinned and need a Savior?

Does the child recognize conviction of sin in their life? Fruits of the Spirit? Life change?

Related to baptism: Does the child know their testimony, their story of how God has worked in their life?

Are they ready to tell others about their faith? Is the initiation for baptism coming from the child or are the parents driving it? Do they understand the meaning of baptism and are they old enough to remember it later?

These are heavy topics and we must take our time and help families lead their children to Christ. Nothing is more important.
