Ministry Tips – Pre-teen ministry

One of my favorite age groups is our pre-teens, those who are 4th–6th graders. The children in this category are smart, energetic and fun. They like to hang out with friends and love to learn new things about God.

Because of their uniqueness we minister to them in different ways. They are not “little kids” and they really don’t fit in a youth or student ministry either. They are in a transitional phase of life and are rapidly changing — physically, emotionally and mentally. They are dealing with pressures that are unique to them in regards to relationships, families and challenges at school. This group is constantly exposed to mature issues they are not equipped to process. In addition they are savvy enough to understand and relate to the world through the Internet and other social media.

Churches that recognize the needs of early adolescence can and should consider developing ministries to meet these needs. A strategically developed plan to assist during this wonderful transition in life can address many of the cultural challenges of Christianity.

Specifically designed ministries and programs need to be implemented in churches just for this demographic. Missions trips, retreats, camps, leadership training, fun Bible study groups, dynamic worship and service opportunities must all be considered when developing a comprehensive pre-teen ministry.

Whatever the vision you choose, do it soon. These kids and their families are vital to the ministry of your church and to the Kingdom.
