This May, senior adults in Alabama will have an opportunity to hear ways they can continue to share Christ with those around them.
The Senior Adult Evangelism Conference, sponsored by the Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions (SBOM), is coming to Heritage Baptist Church, Montgomery, in Montgomery Baptist Association May 8 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
This year’s conference, Seniors Passionately Serving Jesus, is a time “for inspiration and challenge,” according to Teman Knight, an associate in the SBOM office of evangelism. He said that for six years, the evangelism office has teamed up with the SBOM discipleship and family ministries office to hold the annual conference. “We want to remind (participants) that the largest part of the population is senior adults, but many of them still don’t know Jesus,” Knight said.
Featured speakers are Bob Pitman, pastor of Kirby Woods Baptist Church, Memphis, Tenn., and Dale Huff, director of the SBOM LeaderCare and church administration office.
Carey Knowles of Georgia will share his comedy and entertainment, and The Heritage Brothers, a gospel group that began at Heritage Baptist, will sing.
Knight, along with Eileen Wright of the discipleship and family ministries office, said they want to remind seniors that just because they are older does not mean that it is time to stop witnessing.
“This is an opportunity for us to inspire them to remember they’re still in the game,” Knight said. “While they’re still on earth, God has things for them to do.”
Wright said many church ministries depend on seniors.
As the face of the senior adult population changes, many new ministry opportunities are opening up, such as teaching computer or other skill classes in the church or sharing knowledge of the “lost arts” of quilting and crocheting, she said.
Wright and Knight also want to encourage participants to bring their unchurched friends to the conference.
Wright noted that the speakers and those bringing special music and entertainment appeal to many types of people.
“We hope that each year people will see more and more that ‘This is something that I can bring someone to,’” she said.
No registration is necessary to attend the conference. For more information, call Knight at 1-800-264-1225, Ext. 260, or Wright at Ext. 221. (TAB)
